01 The place Cora, Wyoming

Ten acres at the edge of the Bridger‑Teton.

North of Cora on the Upper Green, on the sage flat where the Wind Rivers start. Land so rugged it wasn’t homesteaded until the 1940s. No neighbors in sight, and a gravel road in.

The mornings

The elk come down through the willows first. Then the moose, unhurried.

By the time the coffee is poured the range has gone pink from the bottom up, and you are still on the deck in a blanket, having accomplished nothing at all.

This isn’t a resort. It’s not a mansion in a suburb. It’s about as far out there as you can get, and most people who stay once come back.

Sunrise crosses the Wind Rivers. The deck faces it.

A real cabin, not a lodge: wood, a fireplace, a kitchen you can actually cook in, and an enormous deck pointed at the range. Guests get the whole house, the fishing pond, the stream, and the land. Check-out is 10 am. Six guests at most.

We had wildlife come in every evening, including elk, moose, and a buck that walked right up to our window.

Close enough to Jackson Hole but still out in the countryside. Peaceful, beautiful, and the house has everything you need.

I went to school at Wyoming and never really left. Ask me where the fish are, where the snow is good, or which pass is open. I’ll tell you honestly.
